As many things go, the initial idea is far from the final product. The board game started out as an ice breaker for students in my college club. It was going to be similar to Monopoly, where properties would be club positions and we'd poke fun at some club responsibilities. Eventually, I thought "why not make a 'real' version out of it, then make a club edition?" As more and more ideas came, and as my time as the club's public relations officer ended, it became something greater than I could have possibly imagined.
The Variant Garden is an adventure RPG where everything is based on dice rolls and cards. Dice determine your movement and attacks. Cards are used for items, dialog, and weapons. It can be seen as a mix between video game ideas and board game implementation. Although being inspired by games like Zelda and Crystalis, it can act as a multiplayer experience. The main loop of the game are the battles, where one or more people fight a variety of enemies and bosses. As well as powering yourself up to fight tougher opponents. It can last from 2 to 8 hours.
As of right now, the board game is almost complete and just requires a couple blind tests with its target demographic. Although some testers say the game is good to go, I need to make the game the best it can be for anyone, before sale. After this, The Variant Garden should be ready for publication and distributed.
